Morris Frank, a blind man who provided the opportunity of
independence to thousands of blind people, was a true leader. What originally
led me to him was my love of animals. I started researching the history of
animals, dogs in particular, and stumbled upon Seeing Eye guide dogs. After
more research, I realized that none of this would ever have been accomplished
if not for the efforts of one brilliant man, Morris Frank.
My first priority was background research. I read books authored by Frank himself, which provided me with information on his overall life. Inspired by his story, I gathered secondary sources from websites, quotes, and pictures. Famous quotes stated by Morris Frank were very explanatory and expressed his philosophy of self- reliance, no charities openly. Images of Morris Frank also illustrated a basic structure of his feelings. Primary sources, however, were an entirely different matter. The Seeing Eye sent me extremely useful information. The next step in my research, after collecting information by mail, was to find someone who had actually met with Morris Frank. For this trip to New Jersey was essential. It was the turning point for me, to actually see how truly a remarkable organization Seeing Eye is. There, I differentiated between the present and past-day work ethics and how his legacy continues. Also, Mr. Doug Roberts, who had known Morris Frank personally, obliged me by coming over there himself and meeting with me. From the kindness of the voluntary archivist at the Seeing Eye, Mr. Bruce Johnson, I obtained letters and Frank’s unpublished journal which gave me information not well known, including his early childhood and the influence of his mother on shaping his character. The visit to the archives of the Seeing Eye was very informative and I was also able to obtain plenty more original primary sources, including information on Frank’s visits with the Presidents of the United States, which I was unable to get from Washington D.C.’s museum.
After all the information I had, I felt a website was the most appropriate way to express Morris Frank’s life and legacy. I was able to describe his leadership in 1200 words and still place all of my pictures, quotes, and videos of my interviews. It was the ideal choice for my project. Also, I could possibly use it in the future to contribute to the Seeing Eye.
Morris Frank’s work continues to help thousands of blind people live as normal a life as possible without dependence on others. Though he was blind himself, he had a vision to help the entire blind cause. He was able to accomplish this because of his perseverance and untiring efforts. He changed the world’s view on blind people. After Morris Frank’s work in creating awareness and acceptance of dogs in society, blind men are accepted and treated civilly. This and much more can be credited to one man, Morris Frank. In my opinion Morris Frank remains a true inspiration for anyone with a disability.
